This stamp is part of the 1893 Columbian Issue, the first commemorative series of postage stamps ever issued by the United States. Released to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World, the series was timed to coincide with the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The 2-cent denomination was the most heavily produced in the series, as it covered the standard first-class domestic letter rate. The design is based on the painting "Landing of Columbus" by John Vanderlyn, which hangs in the United States Capitol Rotunda.

Technical Specifications:

  • Catalog Number: Scott #231.

  • Denomination: 2 Cents (2¢).

  • Release Date: January 1, 1893.

  • Printing Method: Engraved (American Bank Note Company).

  • Perforation: 12.

  • Color: Brown Violet.

  • Subject: Christopher Columbus and his crew landing on the shores of the New World.

Condition Analysis:

  • Status: Used. The stamp features a heavy black ink cancellation (likely a duplex or machine cancel) showing fragments of "AM," "D," and "93," which significantly obscures the central and right portions of the vignette.

  • Centering: Fine-Average (F/Avg). The design is noticeably shifted toward the right and bottom margins. The left and top margins are wider, while the right perforations are nearly touching the outer frame of the design.

  • Reverse Side: The gum is absent as this is a used specimen. The paper exhibits natural toning consistent with its age (over 130 years), but no major thins or mechanical defects are visible in the provided images.

  • Perforations: Mostly intact; however, there is typical "shaggy" wear on the edges, and a few teeth on the lower-right corner appear slightly shortened, which is common for stamps from this era separated by hand.
