1980, 1¢ "The Ability to Write" (Inkwell & Quill), Coil Pair, US (Scott #1811)
$30.00
This stamp is part of the Americana Series (1975–1981), a definitive set designed to celebrate the fundamental values and roots of American democracy. The design features a colonial inkwell and quill, symbolizing the freedom of the press and the power of the written word, framed by the legend "The Ability to Write • A Root of Democracy."
This is a genuine coil pair of the 1980 issue. While this specific design was first released as a sheet stamp in 1977 (Scott #1581), this specimen is distinctively the 1980 coil version (Scott #1811), identified by its straight, imperforate top and bottom edges. It was widely used as a "make-up" rate stamp to meet postage increases. Due to the heavy cancellation and common availability, this specific pair holds standard collector value.

Printing Method: Engraved (Rotary Press).
Perforation: 10 Vertically (Imperforate Horizontally).

Condition Analysis:
Status: Used. The stamps bear a heavy, continuous wavy-line machine cancellation that obscures much of the central design and text across both stamps.
Centering: Fine (F). The design is noticeably shifted to the left on both stamps, resulting in a narrow left margin and a wider right margin.
Reverse Side: The gum is absent as it is a used copy. Traces of cancellation ink are visible through the paper.
Perforations: The vertical perforations between the stamps are intact. The top and bottom edges are straight (factory cut), which is the defining characteristic of this coil issue.
