$30.00

This stamp is part of the Great Americans Series, a definitive series issued by the United States Postal Service between 1980 and 1999 to replace the Americana Series. The series is noted for its simple, elegant engraved portraits of individuals who made significant contributions to American history. The 3-cent denomination honors Henry Clay (1777–1852), the esteemed "Great Compromiser" who served as a U.S. Senator and Secretary of State.

This is a genuine horizontal pair of Scott #1846. As a sheet-issued stamp with a perforation of 11, it is a common definitive issue. While the individual stamps have a high printing volume, a well-preserved horizontal pair with Very Fine centering, as seen here, is a desirable representation of this specific release for a specialized collection.

Technical Specifications:

  • Catalog Number: Scott #1846.

  • Denomination: 3 Cents (3¢).

  • Release Date: July 13, 1983.

  • Printing Method: Engraved (Intaglio).

  • Perforation: 11.

  • Color: Olive brown.

  • Subject: Portrait of Henry Clay, based on a 19th-century engraving.

Condition Analysis:

  • Status: Used. The pair bears black ink cancellations. The left stamp shows a wavy-line machine cancel, while the right stamp features a partial circular date stamp (CDS). The cancellations are moderate and do not significantly obscure the primary subject or denomination.

  • Centering: Very Fine (VF). The designs are exceptionally well-balanced within the perforated margins. The margins are uniform on all sides, which is superior to the standard "Fine" centering often found in mass-produced definitive issues of this era.

  • Reverse Side: The gum is absent as these are used specimens. The paper remains sound and clean, with no visible thins, tears, or significant aging stains. Small paper fibers from the original envelope are present on the reverse.

  • Perforations: Generally intact and well-defined. The vertical perforation line connecting the two stamps is fully intact. Some minor "shaggy" teeth are visible on the outer edges, which is a common characteristic of stamps separated from a sheet at a post office.
