2018, Forever Santa Claus Holding Card, Multi-colored, US (Scott #5335) (Code L)
$5.00
Haddon Sundblom painted Santa Claus for Coca-Cola's holiday advertising from the 1930s into the 1960s. His model was a retired salesman named Lou Prentiss. After Prentiss died, Sundblom used his own reflection in a mirror. That image became the Western world's defining picture of Santa Claus, and this stamp reproduces one of those paintings.

CONDITION ANALYSIS (Seller-Assessed)
Status: Used
Grading: Fine
Postmark: Very faint, consistent with modern USPS automated processing where the cancellation is typically applied to the surrounding envelope paper rather than centered over the stamp face.
Obverse: All major design elements are fully intact and clearly visible. The Santa portrait with the held "To Santa" envelope, gold decorative frame, deep emerald-green background, red lower band, and "USA FOREVER" inscription are all present. The year "2018" in the upper right corner is legible. Colors remain vibrant with no visible fading.
Reverse: No traditional gum present, as expected for a used self-adhesive stamp. Reverse shows exposed stamp paper with visible surface texture and fine fibers consistent with careful removal from an envelope. No tears, thinning, staining, or repairs observed.
Centering / Margins: Good to Very Good. Die-cut simulated perforations present on all four sides. Minor roughness along one perforation edge consistent with normal booklet separation.
Perforations: No evidence of artificial alteration, reperforation, or trimming.
Other Findings: The "To Santa" envelope clearly visible in Santa's hands confirms this as Scott #5335, distinguishing it from Scott #5332 (head portrait only, no object in hand) and the other two designs in the booklet.
HISTORY
Haddon Sundblom began painting Santa Claus for The Coca-Cola Company's holiday advertising in 1931 and continued for more than three decades. Before Sundblom, Santa's visual appearance in American culture was inconsistent - he was depicted in a range of sizes, colors, and temperaments. Sundblom's version, which appeared annually in magazines and on Coca-Cola displays throughout the country, standardized the image: large, warm, rosy-cheeked, twinkling-eyed, dressed in red. The consistency and reach of the campaigns embedded that image so thoroughly that it became essentially universal in the Western world.
Sundblom's original model was Lou Prentiss, a retired salesman and friend. After Prentiss died, Sundblom began using his own reflection as reference, painting himself into one of the most recognized commercial illustrations in American history.
The USPS Sparkling Holidays series, issued October 11, 2018, brought four of Sundblom's Coca-Cola paintings into the philatelic record. Scott #5335 shows Santa holding a small envelope addressed "To Santa" in a child's handwriting: one of the more emotionally direct images in the set. The first-day ceremony was held in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
STEVEN SAYS
Sundblom painted himself into the image after his model died. That's the Santa Claus most of the world recognizes now. The "To Santa" card in his hand is what makes this specifically Scott #5335 and not #5332 - worth knowing if you're sorting the Sparkling Holidays booklet.
